Common Errors
Adding Mixed Numbers - Most students have an easier time adding than subtracting. The mixed numbers sometimes has an answer with a whole number that has a fraction greater than one (improper fraction). They need to rewrite this as a mixed number with a fraction. Example: The answer to an addition problem is 11 5/4. Their final answer should be 12 1/4.Subtraction Mixed Numbers - This is illustrated above. Most students are regrouping, but some are moving over 10 instead of a whole fraction. In the example above they need to add 4/4ths not 10/4ths. Some students aren't adding the initial fraction to the whole fraction. From above, they need to add 1/4 and 4/4 to equal 5/4 before subtracting.
