Units of Measure

I sent home a sheet with the kids that have the units of measure for our math unit. They include the metric and U.S. customary systems. I also gave them the same sheet to keep at school. They will be able to use that sheet on their quick quizzes and tests throughout the unit. I don't there is a reason to memorize those.

News and Notes

Music Recorders
The fourth graders will be starting to use recorders in music soon. They can buy the recorders from school for $3. If you already have one around the house the students can bring them in too. Recorder or recorder money should be turned in by this Friday, January 29. Many students have already done this.

Units of Measure
In math we are getting into Unit 5, which is the units of measure for the metric system. We started with length, then volume, and mass. The kids are seeing there is a pattern with the metric system that stays the same even as we measure new objects. I have included a chart that shows the prefix for each conversion as well.

Google Login
In computers the students have been working with their Google accounts, which are new to them. We started with e-mail and are now working with Google Drive and Google Docs. These Google tools will allow them to do school work very easily next year with an Internet connection.

To log into their google account they put in their first and last name with no space along with @students.igs.k12.wi.us. An example would be janedoe@students.igs.k12.wi.us. Then they use the same password they use at school to login.

Congrats

Reading Millionaire!
Congratulations to Sophie for being our first reading millionaire! That is a huge accomplishment and not easy to do.

Xtra Math
The following students have passed the math portion of xtra math: Lilliana, Rylee, and Sophie Great job to you too!
As a reminder, kids can go to xtramath.org to practice their math facts. Students practice about once a week on the iPads during our Intervention time. It is one of their stations.

PAWs Reward
The class has also earned another PAWs reward, and they chose gum chewing in class. We will do this reward on Friday, January 29. Students can bring in their own gum to chew during Language Arts and Math time on that day. They will stick to one piece of gum at a time so they should only need a couple of pieces.

Upcoming Events

School Events
Math Test Tuesday
We have our Unit 4 math test which is mostly about story problems on Tuesday. Then when we return on Thursday we'll start a unit on measure. The most difficult part of the unit is definitely the metric units of measure.

No School Wednesday
Just as a reminder, the students do not have school on Wednesday. The teachers have an inservice day and time to work on report cards.

Third Quarter Begins Thursday
Half way through the school year! It always goes so quickly!

Other Stuff
There are a couple of interesting TV shows on with Wisconsin roots. Here they are if you are interested.

First Superbowl
Tonight (Jan. 15) on NFL Network is a replay of the first Superbowl 49 years ago! They thought the game was lost, but apparently have pulled together all the plays to run the entire game. Of course the Packers were in the first Superbowl.

The Journey
On Big Ten Network there is a feature on Greg Gard, which has a section on Cobb, WI. That originally ran last weekend, but reruns are being run several times on Saturday.

Library

Mrs. Miller has a project that she would like to do with fourth grade. Students are being asked to bring in a cereal box with their name on it. She will collect them in the library and have them covered with white paper. Students will then need to check out and READ a chapter book at their level. They will have two weeks to do that. After the two weeks are up, they are going to start creating a book report in library. They will be on display in the library when finished.

Welcome Back

It feels good to be back in a routine. The kids will have math homework tonight as well as a normal list of spelling words. A few students used their homework pass already tonight. They got two of those from me at Christmas.

Also, the January Reading Calendars are coming home tonight. I crossed off the 1st-3rd on their calendar. They will still have the four skips for the remaining 28 days. It's their New Year's present. :)

If your child hasn't turned in their December Reading Calendar they can do that tomorrow still. I will be sending home the Pizza Hut coupons on Tuesday.
