Math Test
We will be having our math test for Unit 5 on either Thursday or Friday of this week. I am hoping we'll be ready to go by Thursday so they don't have to do it on the day of their Valentine's Day party.
The students will be able to use a conversion chart for their test, which is the same one they brought home a couple of weeks ago.
The test will also have a section that deals with area and perimeter, which we are finishing up this week.

Quick Notes
Language Arts Test and Spelling
We will have our language arts test this week. I have it split into two days and the plan is to do it on Tuesday and Wednesday. If the weather doesn't cooperate we'll do Wed.-Thurs.
Since we have a test during the week we won't have a full language art unit. There will not be any spelling this week.
February Reading Calendars
The February Reading Calendars went home tonight. If students forgot to turn in their January calendars they can still do that tomorrow. I added the class list on the back of the Feb. Calendar for Valentine's Day Cards.
Valentine's Day Notes
Our Valentine's Day party will be on Friday, February 12th this year. We'll do it right at the end of the day. The Valentine's Day committee (Brady, Dom, Jayden, Makaya, and Sophie) are making plans, but I can share a few things. If you can get those made by the end of the week or Feb. 9 at the latest it'll give kids time to deliver their cards.
Boxes
The class voted to make their Valentine's Day boxes at home this year. Many said that they have old boxes from last year. The designs up to the kids as long as they have their name on it.
Valentine's Day Cards
If students bring in cards they need to bring one for everyone in class. As I mentioned above, I put our class list on the back of the February Reading Calendar. Several kids have asked about adding treats, and I am okay with small treats although they will probably take them home instead of eating at school. The party committee are planning snacks.

Units of Measure
I sent home a sheet with the kids that have the units of measure for our math unit. They include the metric and U.S. customary systems. I also gave them the same sheet to keep at school. They will be able to use that sheet on their quick quizzes and tests throughout the unit. I don't there is a reason to memorize those.

News and Notes
Music Recorders
The fourth graders will be starting to use recorders in music soon. They can buy the recorders from school for $3. If you already have one around the house the students can bring them in too. Recorder or recorder money should be turned in by this Friday, January 29. Many students have already done this.
Units of Measure
In math we are getting into Unit 5, which is the units of measure for the metric system. We started with length, then volume, and mass. The kids are seeing there is a pattern with the metric system that stays the same even as we measure new objects. I have included a chart that shows the prefix for each conversion as well.
Google Login
In computers the students have been working with their Google accounts, which are new to them. We started with e-mail and are now working with Google Drive and Google Docs. These Google tools will allow them to do school work very easily next year with an Internet connection.
To log into their google account they put in their first and last name with no space along with @students.igs.k12.wi.us. An example would be janedoe@students.igs.k12.wi.us. Then they use the same password they use at school to login.

Congrats
Reading Millionaire!
Congratulations to Sophie for being our first reading millionaire! That is a huge accomplishment and not easy to do.
Xtra Math
The following students have passed the math portion of xtra math: Lilliana, Rylee, and Sophie Great job to you too!
As a reminder, kids can go to xtramath.org to practice their math facts. Students practice about once a week on the iPads during our Intervention time. It is one of their stations.
PAWs Reward
The class has also earned another PAWs reward, and they chose gum chewing in class. We will do this reward on Friday, January 29. Students can bring in their own gum to chew during Language Arts and Math time on that day. They will stick to one piece of gum at a time so they should only need a couple of pieces.

Math Test Tuesday
We have our Unit 4 math test which is mostly about story problems on Tuesday. Then when we return on Thursday we'll start a unit on measure. The most difficult part of the unit is definitely the metric units of measure.
No School Wednesday
Just as a reminder, the students do not have school on Wednesday. The teachers have an inservice day and time to work on report cards.
Third Quarter Begins Thursday
Half way through the school year! It always goes so quickly!
Other Stuff
There are a couple of interesting TV shows on with Wisconsin roots. Here they are if you are interested.
First Superbowl
Tonight (Jan. 15) on NFL Network is a replay of the first Superbowl 49 years ago! They thought the game was lost, but apparently have pulled together all the plays to run the entire game. Of course the Packers were in the first Superbowl.
The Journey
On Big Ten Network there is a feature on Greg Gard, which has a section on Cobb, WI. That originally ran last weekend, but reruns are being run several times on Saturday.
